THE ORIGINS OF THE NORTH CAROLINA MOTORSPORTS ASSOCIATION

By the early 2000s, motorsports in North Carolina had grown into something far bigger than race day. Hundreds of businesses, including race teams, tracks, manufacturers, marketing firms, suppliers, museums, sponsors, and service providers, were fueling an industry with enormous economic impact. Yet despite its scale and influence, the motorsports industry in North Carolina lacked a unified voice.

That disconnect became the catalyst.

Industry leaders recognized a shared challenge: motorsports businesses were operating independently, often facing legislative, regulatory, and economic issues alone without coordination, advocacy, or a central point of representation. The scope and power of the industry were undeniable, but its influence was fragmented and, too often, overlooked.

In 2002, that reality sparked action.

The North Carolina Motorsports Association (NCMA) was formally established on June 12, 2002, as a nonprofit trade association with a clear and ambitious purpose: to bring the motorsports industry together, protect its interests, and support its long-term growth. The vision was straightforward but bold: to unite the many business elements of motorsports under one banner and create an organization that could speak credibly and effectively on behalf of the entire industry.

From the outset, NCMA was designed to be more than a networking group. Its founding mission focused on proactive advocacy, economic awareness, and industry leadership. NCMA would serve as a legislative and regulatory representative at both the state and local levels, promote the financial and cultural impact of motorsports across North Carolina, and act as a trusted source of information and coordination for its members.

The organization’s structure reflected that purpose. Governed by a Board of Directors and led by an Executive Director, NCMA was built to be industry-led and industry-driven, with day-to-day operations managed professionally and funded through membership support. Early plans emphasized inclusivity, welcoming businesses of all sizes and disciplines, and delivering tangible value through communication, education, promotion, and advocacy.

At the time of its founding, more than 350 motorsports-related businesses were already operating in North Carolina. NCMA was created to serve as the connective tissue, a place where competitors could collaborate, shared challenges could be addressed collectively, and the future of motorsports in North Carolina could be intentionally shaped.

More than two decades later, that founding vision still defines NCMA. What began in 2002 as a response to an unmet need has grown into a lasting commitment: ensuring that motorsports in North Carolina are organized, represented, and positioned to thrive for generations to come.
